‘The Revenant’ was Sunday night’s big winner at the 73rd annual Golden Globes.
Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s survival drama/thriller, set in the 1820s, was named best drama by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), beating out a varied field that included presumed favorite ‘Spotlight’ as well as ‘Carol’, ‘Room’ and ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’.
Leonardo DiCaprio took home best actor and Inarritu best director. The three awards were the most by any nominated film, Foxnews reported.
‘The Martian’ also pulled in big victories, taking the prize for motion picture comedy or musical over ‘Spy’, ‘The Big Short’, ‘Trainwreck’ and ‘Jo’, while Matt Damon won a lead actor award for his performance in the Ridley Scott sci-fi adventure film as an astronaut stranded on Mars. However, the wins raised eyebrows as from the moment Globes nominations were announced, many complained that the movie didn’t belong in the comedy category at all.
Sylvester Stallone got a standing ovation when he was awarded Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for ‘Creed’, for his return to his signature role as Rocky Balboa.
Jennifer Lawrence won her third Golden Globe for a David O. Russell-directed film, grabbing the Best Comedy Actress award for ‘Joy’. First-time nominee Brie Larson won the award for lead actress in a drama for her fierce performance in ‘Room’.
Though ‘Steve Jobs’ failed to win over many critics or moviegoers, Danny Boyle’s drama about the Apple co-founder earned best supporting actress for Kate Winslet, winning her fourth Globe in 11 nominations. It also took home the screenplay award for Aaron Sorkin.
The prize for the Best Original Score of a Motion Picture was awarded to one of cinema’s true masters, the 87-year-old composer Ennio Morricone. His Globe was accepted by director Quentin Tarantino who commissioned the score for his ‘Hateful 8’ from the Italian maestro who had never before won an American award.
‘Inside Out’ won the award for Best Animated Motion Picture and the Cecil B DeMille prize was awarded to Denzell Washington.
Todd Haynes’ ‘Carol’ and Adam McKay’s ‘The Big Short’ which paced the nominees with, respectively, five and four nominations, both went home empty handed on Sunday night.
There were big surprises on the TV side as well, as shows with relatively small audiences scored big, including Amazon’s ‘Mozart in the Jungle’, which earned Globes for comedy series and for its star, Gael Garcia Bernal, and the USA Network’s ‘Mr. Robot’, which earned the drama series award plus one for supporting actor Christian Slater.
