An exhibition of fine silverworks is underway at the landmark Naqsh-e Jahan Square in Isfahan.
Titled ‘Metal Whisper,’ (in Persian Najva-ye Felez), the exhibition opened May 6 for 10 days at Qeysarieh Gate -- the main entrance to Qeysarieh Bazaar leading to Naqsh-e Jahan Square which is one of UNESCO’s world heritage sites, according to Chtn.ir.
The exhibition features metalworks and engravings on silver, with geometric and miniature designs. The event is organized by the Isfahan Handicrafts Guild Association.
Isfahan, Tabriz and Shiraz are the main centers for engraving or ‘qalamzani.’ The craft is the art of carving delicate traditional designs on different metals such as copper, brass, silver, gold and other alloys.
Naqsh-e Jahan was built by Shah Abbas I of the Safavid dynasty (1501-1722) at the beginning of the 17th century. It is bordered on all sides by monumental buildings linked by a series of two-storeyed arcades.
The world heritage site is known for the Imam Mosque, the Mosque of Sheykh Lotfollah, the magnificent Portico of Qaysariyeh and the 15th-century Timurid palace. They are an impressive testimony to the level of social and cultural life in Iran particularly during the Safavid era.
