The latest in a series of workshops on biosafety was held by the Research Center of Environment and Sustainable Development on Monday for experts at the Department of Environment. The workshops are part of a project on implementation of national biosafety frameworks, undertaken in cooperation with the United Nations Environment Program and funded by the Global Environment Facility, IRNA reported. The RCESD aims to enhance the knowledge of DOE staff on the subject through the sessions. "The main goal of the events is to elaborate on the guidelines and protocols to raise awareness among experts and policymakers in the field of biosafety," Jalil Badam Firouz, president of RCESD, said. In the recent workshop, subjects such as national and international laws and standards regarding biosafety and modern biotechnology, global status and uses of genetically modified organisms and methods of assessing and reducing the possible threats of GMOs were discussed. By the end of summer, six workshops will be held by the RCESD under the supervision of the DOE. Biosafety is the prevention of large-scale loss of biological integrity, focusing both on ecology and human health.
